Book List Part 1

I've wanted to keep track of the books I read for a while.  Now that I'm on a Youth Services Librarian committee where part of what we do is read lots of books in order to run a mock awards and pick what books we would choose for various awards, I am making more of an effort to follow through.

Books read for the Printz Mock Awards Committee:

Dante and Aristotle Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz

Oh BoysCollapse )

Friends with Boys by Faith Erin Hicks

Heee SiblingsCollapse )

Buried: A Goth Girl Mystery by Linda Joy Singleton

I just want you to know, this goth girl is totally gothCollapse )

Books Read for Fun:

New X-men Academy X

Mutant High!Collapse )

X-Force

Oh Cable, you're so funny when threatening to put peoples heads on pikesCollapse )

Rereading the Mediator books by Meg Cabot

Those are some damn hot abs for a ghostCollapse )
Title: Back to the Future with a Baby
Author: Ldydragon7
Summary: “Think about it, Nate, it’s the 1950s.  No one would ever think to look for you there.”
Prompt/Prompter: Cable & Deadpool: Back to the Future with a Baby! Deadpool follows Cable after helping him rescue the new Messiahkid, and finds a more convincing argument for him to come along on his time traveling adventures when he stops Bishop from shooting Cable in the back. Prompted by – gladdecease.
Characters/Pairing: Cable/Deadpool (about as slashy as the comic), Hope
Rating: PG-13 for language, one slur, non-graphic mentions of violence and Deadpool
Warnings: Contains Deadpool.  Contents may also contain trace amounts of nuts.
Disclaimer: Cable & Deadpool and everything associated with it is not mine.  I’m just having fun playing in their sandbox.

Authors Note: I was a bit stuck on this one, as it was a fic I very much wanted to read but was not sure I could write.  Then I gave in to Deadpool’s insistence that the only logical place to take Hope was the 1950s and it practically wrote itself.  This fic is more of a series of snapshots, a different style then I normally write, so I hope it works.

So much for you going somewhere I can't follow you, huhCollapse )

Title: Winding Down
Author: Ldydragon7
Summary: The aftermath of a fight.  Hardison’s injured, Parker’s freaked and Eliot wants to punch somebody.  Can be read as pure gen or as pre-P/H/E.
Prompt/Prompter: Leverage; Parker, Eliot, Hardison;  I'd love something about the three of them winding down after a huge fight. Maybe parker is hurt more than the other two and they're taking care of her. it can totally be gen or slash but what I'd really love was something on the edge between the two - you know? some touches, some hugs, enough to not be friendship anymore but not really turning into something sexual. well, fluff, basically ;) from Germanjj
Rating: PG/PG-13 for minor bad language.
Warnings: Non-graphic descriptions of the aftermath of violence.
Disclaimer: Leverage and everything associated with it is not mine.  I’m just having fun playing in their sandbox.

Eliot really wanted to punch somebodyCollapse )

This is why I do this job

One of the things about my job that really makes me happy is when I get the chance to promote things I like and when I get to put strong female characters into the hands of girls. Today I was looking up a book based off of a TV show for a little girl (probably 5 or so years old) that we didn’t have. After, I heard the mother encouraging the girl to look for a different book and listing off types of books that she has gotten before, Dora, Disney, typical ‘little girl’ books but then she also mentioned Batman and Spiderman. I approached and told them that if she was looking for something new I could make recommendations and that if she liked superheroes she might like Wonder Woman. I showed her the easy reader Wonder Woman books and she latched on immediately. It felt really good to not only encourage a young, female superhero fan but to introduce a little girl who knows Batman, Spiderman, The Hulk and Ironman (and wow a lot of superheroes had ‘man’ in their name) to a female superhero who stars in her own book and isn’t a supporting character to the male superheroes.

Fic Prompts

In an attempt to motivate myself to write more and because it sounds like fun I have signed up as a writer for Wishlist fic.

Wishlist 2011, Prompt Post

What is the Wishlist?

The Wishlist is a multi-fandom Christmas fanfiction fest. It is something that started very small and simple three years ago. The premise was simply to write twenty-four ficlets in response to twenty-four prompts, posted between 1 Dec and 24 Dec. Fandom gifts, if you will. Since then it's grown and changed a bit.

&lta href="http://wishlist-fic.livejournal.com/profile"> The community and the rules in detail can be found here.

I have signed up to be a writer and if you want to give me a prompt, please leave a comment on this entry.

Rules

- I accept the first 6 prompts I am given, regardless of who you are or if I know you.

- You give me characters/pairing, a fandom and a prompt
- If I don't know the fandom you're requesting, your prompt doesn't count. My current perfered fandoms/pairings are:

A) Marvel:
Cable & Deadpool, Deadpool (Joe Kelly era), X-Factor (vol.3), willing to try old school X-Force, Young Avengers, General X-men (though be warned my response to most of the relatively current stuff is putting my fingers in my ears and singing loudly and off key)

Preferred parings/relationships: Gen, Cable/Deadpool, Rictor/Shatterstar, Billy/Teddy, Logan/Jean Gray, Deadpool/Siren

Friendship (Not romantic): Logan & Jubilee, Logan & Kitty, Wolverine & Nightcrawler

Willing to consider other characters/pairings

B) Leverage:
Gen, Hardison/Parker or Hardison/Eliot or possibly H/E/P

C) The Losers:
Movie or Comic (though not dealing with post ending comic spoilers unless its AU or fix-it fic) Gen, Jensen/Cougar

D) Clamp:
Subaru/Seishirou, Kurogane/Fai, Eagle/Lantis/Hikaru, Toya/Yuki are my favorites and I will write pretty much all cannon relationships (I’m sketchy on Clover, RG Vada and Kobato)

- You can request fandoms you know I have written in the past and I will consider them. If I feel I can’t write in that universe right now I’ll ask you to give me a different prompt.

- If I find your prompt in any way offensive, I will disregard it, too. Fair warning.

- Your prompts should somewhat match what I usually write. It can be a quote, an idea, a specific situation, but the more you give me, the more I have to work with. Throwing Character X/Character Y, whatever at me is going to get you whatever.

- If you don't have an lj account, leave an anonymous comment, but make sure to sign it with a name (possibly your TtH name, if you're coming from that end.)

- I answer the prompts in the order I like best and post them here and/or in the &ltlj user="Wishlist_fic"> community, one a day, starting 1 Dec 2011.

Again, I need fandom, characters or pairings, prompt, and your name.

Grownup Geek

I now have, hanging on my living room wall, a beautifully framed set of original artwork from the mad science web comic Girl Genius by Phil and Kaja Foglio.  This feels both incredibly geeky (It's a web comic.  With Mad Science!  And Death Rays!) and incredibly grown up (It's original art, that I paid a lot of money to get framed).  (Not to mention I have a living room wall to hang it upon.)  I have to say, I really like the juxtaposition of the two.

A Very Librarian Dilemma

For a very long time I have wanted to organize my books properly instead of just - put all books of the same size together, books of the same author together and then shove all other books where ever they fit on the shelf and double stack everything.  Thanks to my soon to be beloved-former-roommates I now have a decent amount of bookshelf space but now I'm faced with a cataloging dilemma.  My non-fiction was easy, I've organized everything by subject and within that general to specific.  I've included children's lit/picture books with non-fiction.  Manga will also be easy and that I plan to double stack.

The problem arises with my fiction collection, some of it is paperback of a standard size while some of it is in hardcover or paperback of a tall/non-standard size.  Some of the bookshelves I have lend themselves better to one size or the other.  So do I put hardcover fiction books in one bookcase and small paperbacks in a different one, even though it means separating books in the same series?  Or do I shelve them together and deal with a large discrepancy in size?  Do I double stack paperbacks in front of hardcovers of the same author since the taller bookshelf is also very deep?  Do I seperate YA fiction from adult fiction, or do I intermingle them and organize them by genre so YA and adult fantasy are together and YA and adult realistic fiction are together.  As a random side note- my realistic fiction section rather small and organizing by genre would mean putting a novel about the rivalry between to Go masters next to a fluffy Meg Cabot office romance.  Throwing in the YA books would at least add a book about a teen pro chess player and a teen ballerina contemplating their place in the world and the cost of their chosen obsessions.

The genre vs. target age I can deal with, but the hardcover/paperback  size vs series is a dilemma.  I get the feeling I'll be trying several configurations before I'm happy.

X-Men First Class

Just got back from seeing X-men First Class with the roommates. X-men First Class SpoilersCollapse )

I'm reminded how fun little kids can be

A nine year old boy in my after school storytime just explained to me his plan to use a shrink ray to shrink the moon, take it and then people will give him whatever he wants to get the moon back making him the greatest super-villian in the world.  He also expounded upon the reasons why having minions are awesome.  I'm pleased and impressed that he used the word minion correctly in a sentance.  This also gives me some great ideas of storybooks to pick for next week.    *insert evil laughter here*
